Miss Elizabeth Allen – An Introduction
Miss Elizabeth Allen – Life & Work, by Hazel Conway
Miss Elizabeth Allen – Exhibitions & Press

Miss Elizabeth Allen – A Catalogue Raisonné
Although this is not intended to be a definitive Catalogue Raisonné, it may fulfill some of the functions of one, hence the title. Each recorded artwork has been given an ‘EA number’. These have been given partly based on the timeline of their appearance in exhibition catalogues and partly randomly and do not indicate a timeline of execution/creation. Numbers in brackets after the exhibition indicate the number of the artwork in the exhibition catalogue.

Dates of execution/creation are unknown, and works (except for the ‘Autobirragraphy’) are not dated, but it believed that some or even many artworks in the second Crane Kalman Gallery exhibition in 1967 were made following the success of the first 1966 exhibition at the Crane Kalman Gallery, and successive exhibitions in the UK & US. As well as not being dated, works are not signed. At least, no artworks have been yet discovered bearing a signature or monogram of any form.

Many pieces for exhibitions held in museums in and outside the U.K. were loaned back from Crane Kalman Gallery buyers at either exhibition, or were loaned by Crane Kalman Gallery if not sold.

All artworks sold by Crane Kalman Gallery bore a gallery paper label on the backboard with the the title of the piece, the artist’s name, the purchaser’s name, and the month and year of sale. Sometimes the price originally paid is also listed on an additional receipt. Most works were sewn onto fabric covered backboards by Crane Kalman Gallery, but some were close framed, with no mount or border. In most cases, the fabric artwork (originally) presses up against the glass.

Where other sale prices are listed publicly (for example sale by auction), or otherwise made available, they have been listed here.

It is not known:
• How many textile artworks Elizabeth Allen (a.k.a. ‘Queen’) created across her long lifetime, even though some press reports state that she only began creating pictures to hang on the wall around 20 years before her first exhibition in 1966;
• Whether (or if) any were sold or given away before her first exhibition in 1966;
• What happened to the ‘hundreds‘ of panels Patrick Heron wrote about on his first visit to Allen;
• Where any of the above unexhibited artworks (see above), and the majority of the exhibited artworks, are located today. One of the main aims of this catalogue is to try and ‘flush out’ Allen’s artworks that may currently be ignored or forgotten.
As such, only her exhibited works, each of which bore a title, are currently included below. It’s likely that the majority of her work (even some of the exhibited works) became damaged and/or was discarded.

With thanks to Mike Dando & Liz Jones for their work compiling Excel spreadsheets of Allen’s work that form the basis of this catalogue.
