A 1960s Swedish Boda glass paperweight or pin dish, designed by Erik Hoglund
Description
I love these chunky little dishes. They can be used as a paperweight, or a dish or tray to store paperclips, pins, keys or whatever. There's something very tactile - as well as visual - about them.
Poured into a shallow square mould, a stamp was pressed into the middle of the molen glass to leave a deep well with a raised pattern. Here, the pattern is a walking ox reminiscent of Prehistoric cave paintings. The opaque, almost opalescent, creamy light blue is both unusual and eye-catching.
Around 10.2cm square, 2.4cm deepest.
Erik Hoglund (1932-98) was one of the most celebrated and experimental Swedish mid-century modern glass designers and is recognised today for his chunky, rounded and almost primitive forms in vibrant, strong colours. He worked as a designer at Boda Glassworks from 1953-73 before founding his own glass studio and producing designs for Pukeberg, Lindshammar and Strombergshyttan on a freelance basis.
