A 1920s-30s French or Belgian Art Deco ‘Surrealist’ Eyeball or ‘Target’ Vase
Description
This bold and modern ball vase could certainly be described as 'eye-catching'. The spherical body is moulded with circular gently-rounded stepped rings and glazed in graduated blue in two areas, placed diagonally near the top and bottom. The outermost and innermost rings are outlined in black and at the centre of each 'eye' is a black 'pupil'. The form sits on a low tapered foot and has a low collar neck. The base of the vase is painted 171. Over the years, the glaze has taken on a craquelure effect, with grey glaze crazing, that works uncannily well with the idea of it being an eye. Although I am unable to trace the maker, I am sure that it is French or Belgian. I'm also sure that I've never seen another quite like it. Modern, quirky, and with more than a tinge of Surrealism! A real statement piece.
16cm high, 14cm diameter.
Condition
As photographed, with no cracks or chips. Wear consistent with age. There's a small white dot caused by a skip in the glaze on the collar, and one small glaze flake, which has since been coloured black with ink, so is not noticeable except on very close inspection. The craquelure effect has a great density of varied lines.
