A unique signed mid-late 20thC African Folk Art carved wood sculpture of a head
Description
This hand-carved hardwood sculpture of a head is a cut above the usual tourist pieces produced in Africa from the early 20th century onwards. Rather than being a repeated, near identical form in an ebonised wood, this example shows more creativity and stylisation in terms of form and detail, particularly on the face. A lot more work went into carving this example. It's also somewhat reminiscent of some of Modigliani's sculptural stone heads, and the drawings for them. Unusually, it is signed by the (unknown) artist with an 'AW' monogram - 99% of similar sculptures are unsigned, marking this out from the rest. I'm describing this as 'folk art', rather than 'tribal art', as this term seems more fitting given the design. Polished over the years to a pleasing light sheen.
22.4cm high, base around 8cm square.
Condition
Excellent original vintage condition, as photographed, noting some light surface scratches as to be expected. Any small areas of white deposit seen in the photographs are the remains of dried polish from previous owners and can be removed easily.
