Description

'Musiciens Ambulants' (travelling musicians) shows two sombre and soulful musicians, one on crutches, and their dog on a leash moving forward through an abstracted landscape. Behind them, a third musicians holds or plays a stringed instrument.

This etching is signed 'Coussens' in pencil on the bottom left, and numbered in pencil 26 from a limited edition of 100.

Armand Coussens (1881-1935) was a French etcher known for his contrast of dramatic, dark drypoint and lighter, fine soft etching lines - as seen here. After studying at the Beaux Arts in Nîmes under Alexis Lahaye, he was primarily based in Nîmes, but lived in Paris for seven years when he exhibited at many major salons. He began etching in 1912, seeing success from 1914.

Condition
A strong, impression with dark, velvety drypoint, a clear platemark and full untrimmed margins with deckle edges. Clean slightly creamy-yellow wove paper, with tapering darkened strip to bottom edge and handling marks indicative of handling and age.

Plate 21.2cm wide, 14.9cm high. Paper 33.5cm wide 25.5cm high.
