An unusual Folk Art carved oak profile of a head, probably 19th Century

ith shades of the work of Dame Elisabeth Frink (1930-93), this profile of a head against a square block is carved from a single piece of dark oak. The top surface has two old nails which protrude slightly from the top, suggesting that it fitted into something larger, or was even perhaps suspended in some manner. The front has a deep shine to it from the old varnish that has a 'crocodiled' surface, and the back is unfinished with three other nails slightly protruding from it.

Although I think it dates from the 19th century (although it may well be earlier), the style of the bald head with its angular nose and chin, open mouth and almond eyes is prescient of modern British sculpture from the 20th century. The minimal yet successful treatment of the form with a total lack of extraneous surface details or character also recalls tribal art.

Although such pieces of oak were usually produced for the interiors of churches or other public buildings, it doesn't look very ecclesiastical and there is no obvious theme or other manner of identification. It's a mystery. Whatever it was produced for, it has enormous visual and sculptural appeal and a good age. It'd look great hung on a wall and dramatically lit.

12cm wide, 13cm high, 5.4cm deepest.

As photographed, excellent original antique condition. Some old wear to the ear and a potential loss to the block below the chin from when it was carved.
