Description

Comprised of flat planes of geometric forms, a harmonic sense of perspective and overlapping is gained by the use of colour - orange, blue, cream, grey, and pink. The rounded shapes and colour palette used are typical of the 1960s & 70s, and the overall style of the work is typical of Cahn, a noted female abstract artist.

Printed by the esteemed publisher Mourlot, and bearing the printed '©Mourlot' wording on the bottom right, this is based on a signed limited edition lithograph published in 1973. This is the same size and has the same design and colours, but has the addition of a printed 'Marcelle Cahn' signature in grey under the image. This example is further inscribed and signed by Cahn "Très amicalement à Wolfgang Sauré Marcelle Cahn 1978".

An example of this image from the limited edition is in the Pompidou Centre in Paris. A large size and a real statement piece - framed up, this would look even more stunning.

Marcelle Cahn (1895-1981) was an avant garde French artist known for her Cubist, Purist and Abstract works of art. She was also one of the most important of the few female avant garde artists of the first half of the 20th century. After studying literature and philosophy at Strasbourg, she moved to Berlin where she studied under Lovis Corinth and Eugen Spiro. During the 1920s, she lived between Paris and Strasbourg, studying under Fernand Leger and Amedée Ozenfant and exhibiting her work widely, often at major salons. By the late 1920s, her hallmark geometrical abstraction style was set and her work was seen alongside that by Piet Mondrian, Jean Arp, and Albert Gleizes. She joined the influential Abstraction-Création group in 1930. After the war, her career flourished and she exhibited internationally. From 1972-74, a travelling retrospective of her work was organised by the French National Centre of Contemporary Art.
